Summer is just around the corner; the thermostat rises, the days get longer and smiles get bigger! With more social gatherings and events to attend, the sunny season brings with it exciting opportunities to not only have fun, but to feel and enjoy being healthy too.

Here are my top tips for a fun and healthy summer:

Stay hydrated.

You should aim to drink 2-3 quarts of water each day, but if you’re active and spending time in the sun, you need to ensure that you’re properly hydrating yourself and be prepared to drink extra fluid. Not only will you feel more energetic, you’ll help protect yourself from feeling faint and lethargic. If you don’t enjoy plain water, try adding some sliced cucumber, strawberries, mint and crushed ice for a refreshing, fruity alternative.

Eat plenty of fresh produce

There’s nothing better to eat than a colorful, vibrant and packed with vitamins salad on a hot summer’s day. With so many fantastic fruits and vegetables in season, you’ll never be stuck for ingredients. I recommend heading to your nearest farmers’ market where you can get some great deals and more produce for your dollars. Set yourself a challenge to see how many different colors you can include in your meal!

Exercise in the great outdoors

Exercise releases endorphins, making you feel fantastic post-workout. However, there is nothing better than exercising in nature. Whether it’s going for a jog around your local park, riding your bicycle as you pass by fields of color, or even getting on your mat and practicing yoga in your back yard. Breathing in the fresh air as you move your body will put you in a fantastic mood for the rest of your day.

Get your share of vitamin D

Summer is the ideal time to top up your vitamin D levels. Getting a sufficient amount of vitamin D critical for normal growth and development of bones and teeth, as well as improved resistance against certain diseases. Did you know that you only need 15-20 minutes of sun each day to lift your levels to their optimum? Remember to stay sun savvy and be sure to use plenty of sunscreen, and if your skin is sensitive and you burn easily, spend more time in the shade.

Family activities and adventure

There’s so much to do and enjoy in summer, and it’s an ideal chance for you and the whole family to go on exciting excursions, day trips and weekends away.

Check out what events are taking place in your local area – from music festivals, to food trucks to dancing, you never know what you’ll find!

Stay well this summer, and get all set for the active season ahead by booking in your next appointment today.
